7 Strategic Advantages of Brisbane Airport

As in the opening words of the Brisbane Airport 2020 Preliminary Draft Master Plan, “ Brisbane Airport is Queensland’s major aviation and business hub…”. It has many strategic advantages, a few of which are listed below.

  1. Excellent connection to the CBD. Recently built infrastructure by the state and local governments has meant that Brisbane Airport has well-serviced, excellent connections by public transport, road, and rail to various locations, including networked underground freeways allowing easy access to the airport and to the CBD at even the busiest times of day.
  2. New runway. The parallel runway currently under construction, when finished, is expected to generate $1 billion directly in the first year, and over another $500 million indirectly. By doubling the airport’s capacity aircraft movement, the airport anticipates that it will be able to meet aircraft movement demands across the airport for the next 20 years. By 2040 it is expected that the new parallel runway will generate over $3 billion in direct and indirect revenues
  3. Land area. The Brisbane Airport covers approximately 2,700 hectares of land, giving plenty of room for expansion. In addition to the new runway, the Brisbane Airport has released a plan concerning the construction of a future western terminal which would bring the total number of terminals to three (as seen in the Brisbane Airport 2020 Preliminary Draft Master Plan)
  4. Reputation. The Brisbane Airport is rated as the 18th best airport in the world, and the best airport in the Australia/Pacific region. A high reputation means increased passenger satisfaction, and potentially more passengers considering Brisbane as a destination or as a stopover. Although not a tangible strategic advantage, it can result in increased numbers of passengers and/or higher levels of passenger satisfaction
  5. Recycling water pipeline. This is an environmental initiative that the Brisbane Airport implemented during the construction of the parallel runway. It has already saved over 1.125 gigalitres of water, enough water to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
  6. Supports jobs. The Brisbane Airport, along with the 425 in-airport businesses, together have created over 23,000 jobs, a number that is expected to more than double in 20 years. These 23,000 people receive over $1.5 billion in wages every year, thereby redistributing money and creating wealth across South East Queensland. It is estimated that in one way or another, over 5% of all jobs in South East Queensland rely on the Brisbane Airport, whether that be food companies, taxis, or even a coffee house.
  7. Geographical position. The Brisbane Airport has relative proximity to the US as well as major Asian ports, which are important for fresh produce exporters in Australia. Due to this proximity flight times are reduced, thereby increasing the overall level of interconnection. This is especially convenient for commercial travellers, as no-one enjoys increased flight times.

As can be seen, the Brisbane Airport has many strategic advantages that commend it. From supporting interconnection to supporting jobs, the Brisbane Airport is a major asset to Greater Brisbane, and to all of South East Queensland itself.
