Renowned for its melons, and an great place for tourists, the beautiful town of Chinchilla is famous for its historical museum, its Cultural Centre, and last but definitely not least, the Big Melon, which stretches across a whopping nine metres. Here are a few places that are recommended to visit while in Chinchilla.

Chinchilla Historical Museum:

The Chinchilla Historical Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s agricultural history, which has included the rearing of sheep and growing of crops such as grapes and grains.

The museum also boasts a collection of vintage items, including a steam sawmill dating from 1910, steam engines, cars, clothing items, and many relics. Some of the rooms dedicated to representing the olden days in Claude and authentic slab hut, a blacksmith shop, an old jail and the original Chinchilla school with school rolls and memorabilia. Structures from early town times have also been rebuilt on the museum grounds and add to the historical atmosphere. Other displays include the Cypress Pine Centre, The Green Plague exhibit, and the Melon festival display.

Chinchilla Cultural Centre:

At the pride of the street, the Cultural Centre, events are hosted for one and for all to come and enjoy. It is a centre that brings the entire community together, for the sake of good old fun. You can also book to hold events there in the Soldiers Memorial Auditorium which seats up to 550 easily in theatre mode, or for smaller events, the Wattle Room, which seats 150-200 people theatre style and 100-150 restaurant mode.

The Big Melon:

Another thing to do in chinchilla is visit the Big Melon, which stretches across 9 metres. It represents Australia’s Melon Capital, as Chinchilla is fondly nicknamed. Chinchilla is very famous for its melons, whether they be rockmelons, honeydew, or plain old watermelon and is proud of it. Another thing with melons that happens biennially is the Melon Festival. It is made up of a week of exciting games, concluding in the Melon Games. Some activities include: melon skiing, pip spitting, melon toss, melon bungee and melon ironman, to name a few.

Chinchilla Botanic Parkland:

The Chinchilla Botanic Parkland is a beautiful, peaceful park with a water park incorporated in. On a hot day, it is a perfect place to go with the kids to have a day of wet fun splashing around. When tired of playing in the waterpark, there are beautiful botanic gardens right next to the park where you can dry off while walking and enjoying the beautiful flowers. The water park also has adorable watermelon themed benches and chairs, referring to the towns nickname as Australia’s Melon Capital.

Chinchilla Weir:

The Chinchilla Weir is a perfect place to go for a weekend of water sports and fishing.it is located on the Condamine River, approximately 8 kilometres southeast from Chinchilla. It is suitable for all types of water vehicles, and is a popular destination. A free camp is provided at the weir, with power, toilets, barbecues and picnic tables provided, but a maximum stay of two nights apples. Lodgings are also available in Chinchilla. If fishing or water sports aren’t your thing, there are tracks around the weir suitable for bushwalking and riding bikes with the kids.
