Ground Transport plans and Initiatives in Brisbane Airport

The Brisbane Airport has various initiatives planned in order to increase connectivity on the ground. This is covered under the Brisbane Airport Ground Transport Plan. The purpose of the Ground Transport Plan is as given in the Ground Transport Plan is;

  • “Report on the existing and future transport trends at the airport.
  • Identify transport initiatives and actions to support the economic growth of the airport
  • Target immediate and short-term opportunities to improve capacity, provide transport choice and encourage the use of sustainable transport modes such as public transport and cycling.”

The Brisbane Airport has easy access to the CBD as well as the Port of Brisbane. This is through both roads and a rail system. However, the Ground Transport Plan is supposed to increase overall connectivity through various modes of transport. This is to be done through two initiatives, a new train station at Skygate as well as the introduction of a Mass Transit System. These are outlined below.

  • Mass Transit System. This is designed to be a system that can transport passengers and other members of the public between key points across the airport. These would included places such as the airport terminals, the to-be Auto Mall, the Skygate precinct, and would merge into the preexisting public transport to create a seamless experience for travellers and the rest of the public who are travelling to and from the airport. At the same time, ‘corridors’, as such, between key locations across Brisbane Airport would be preserved in order to maintain flexibility for future development.
  • New train station at Skygate. Public transport is an important part of any type of sustainable growth in a modern city, and has the potential to shape how an urban area is built or used. A new train station at Skygate would be a part of the aforementioned Mass Transit System, and would encourage more traffic across the precinct, as well as creating another option for travellers and employees to be able to move across the airport more efficiently, while also creating another travel option for disadvantages people without a personal vehicle.

As can be seen, the Brisbane Airport has various plans in place into the future for passengers once they hit the ground so that they can have increased connectivity to reach their destination while maintaining flexibility and potential for other possible developments into the future. This is taking into consideration how to merge possible future developments at the airport into preexisting services.
