The ANZACS. They were Australia’s soldiers, those who fought for their King and country. They were willing to die for the cause, and many did.

The ANZACS make up who we are as Australians. We remember them at every memorial and war- the people who died for the freedom for this country. They play a large role in making us who we are – Australians.

There are countless memorials built for these brave soldiers across Brisbane, the most famous being the ANZAC Square, which honours not only the men who fought in WW2, but the other soldiers of Australia who fell in countless wars, from the Boer War to the Vietnam War. A statue that remembers the soldiers who fought in the Boer war stands guard to the entrance – a man and a warhorse armed with a rifle. The waters of the park are a picture of life, and the fountains are carved lions, radiating strength and courage, and the power of the British Empire itself.

The three pathways that radiate from the Shrine of Remembrance are symbolic of the three branches of the Australian Defence Corps- Army, Navy, and Air force. The palms that are found across the Square are symbolic of not only victory, but of the Middle-Eastern theatre of war in WW1, remembered for the interaction of the Australian Light Horse. The shrine of remembrance is a Greek structure, which remembers how the British memorialized war- a ‘fight for civilization’ against the ‘barbaric Hun.’ In addition to that, Greece was the birthplace of democracy, and the source of many of our present artistic, literary, philosophical and scientific traditions. There is no better way to remember the people in the Second World War!

The shrine is inscribed with names of major wars in the history of Australia, and has a simple centrepiece of an eternal flame in memory if the ANZAC’s, a promise that we will never let them out of our minds and hearts.
