Growth Plans for Brisbane Airport

The Brisbane Airport, as Queensland’s major aviation port has over 213,000 aircraft movements and over 23 million passengers in FY17-18. It’s a company that has constant inflow and outflow, with constantly increasing numbers of aircraft’s every year to keep up with the number of passengers.

As a result, the Brisbane Airport has introduced plans to expand further in multiple areas in various ways in order to not only keep up with demand, but keep ahead of it so that there is no loss of revenue. Various growth plans for Brisbane Airport are given below.

  1. New runway. The parallel runway currently under construction will double the airport’s aircraft capacity and transform Brisbane Airport into Australia’s most efficient airport, and is expected to be able to meet aircraft movement demands for the next 20 years. In the first year of operations, it is expected to contribute a $1 billion in direct contributions to the economy, and another $545 million in indirect contributions.
  2. Large geographical area. The Brisbane Airport covers over 2,700 hectares of land, a large part of which is undeveloped. This is land that can be converted into more terminals, facilities, aviation support services, etc.
  3. BNE Auto Mall. A $300 million project covering 51 hectares currently under construction, it will feature not only car dealerships, but also retail amenities. It will also include hotels, event area, conference and exhibition facilities, as well as driver training schools. The professionally designed Mark Skaife-designed test track will be one that both P-platers in a Toyota and CAMS license holder in a Porsche can drive on, opening up a completely new experience. All of this, right next to the BNE International Terminal.

However, the BNE Auto Mall is not simply meant to be another auto mall. It is intended to also set a benchmark for other destinations across Australia as a high-quality tourist destination.

  4. Ground Transport Plan. A potential field of growth for Brisbane Airport will be the development of variou initiatives, one of which would be the creation of a new train station at Skygate.

    a. Skygate train station. This is important since the spread of a public transport system means increased accessibility and connectivity across various parts of Brisbane, and the rest of South East Queensland. It allows employees of various companies to be able to move in a more efficient way to and from their place of work, as well as allowing disadvantaged people without a car for increased travel options. Adding a train station at Skygate would add to and complement pre-existing services, allowing for more travel options for shoppers, travels, passengers, and other people in or near Skygate to access suburbs and other locations that would not normally be as accessible.

As can be seen, the Brisbane Airport has various growth plans that extend up to 20 years into the future. This allows the airport to stay ahead of aircraft movement and passenger demands. This allows for constant growth, and prevents the possibility of Brisbane Airport potentially underperforming due to not having the resources to meet demand.
